Review: Suicide Forest by Jeremy Bates

SUICIDE FOREST IS REAL – ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK

Just outside of Tokyo lies Aokigahara, a vast forest and one of the most beautiful wilderness areas in Japan…and also the most infamous spot to commit suicide in the world. Legend has it that the spirits of those many suicides are still roaming, haunting deep in the ancient woods.

When bad weather prevents a group of friends from climbing neighboring Mt. Fuji, they decide to spend the night camping in Aokigahara. But they get more than they bargained for when one of them is found hanged in the morning–and they realize there might be some truth to the legends after all.

Damn! This book was BRUUUUUUU……TAL. What a way to kick off this series. 😮 Geez!

The story starts off pretty low key. Just a group of friends out for a hike in Japan and then it turns into a savage fight for survival! Dark and messed up. Enough trigger warnings to shake a stick at. Just off the top of my head: sexual assault, suicide, child abuse, forced child birth and animal deaths. Some are briefly mentioned, some are a bigger part of the plot and harder to fast forward through. I’m not even sure what was even up with the ending. 😮

The story really toys with us on if the deaths are supernatural or caused by a person. It only becomes clear towards the end of Suicide Forest. Not going to spoil which way it went, but I was a little bummed it didn’t go the other way instead! Haha, not that that is a bad outcome, just that I was really hoping for the opposite.

It’s all good though. The story is bat shit crazy! The plot is interesting and keeps you guessing the whole time. The ending is definitely a surprise and more then a little f’d up. 😮 Fun start to the series. 🙂
