Review: Run Time by Catherine Ryan Howard

Movie-making can be murder.

The project
Final Draft, a psychological horror. Promising Young Thing Steve Dade will direct.

The tagline
‘Based on a terrifying true story. That hasn’t happened – yet.’

The location
A cottage deep in a forest, miles from anywhere in the wintry wilds of West Cork.

The lead
Former soap-star Adele Rafferty has stepped in to replace the original actress at the very last minute. She can’t help but hope that this will be her big break.

The problem
Something isn’t quite right on the set of Final Draft.
Adele is about to discover that the real horror lies off the page…

Run Time by Catherine Ryan Howard. Narrated by Alana Kerr Collins. Published by Blackstone Publishing, August 2022. Runtime of 11 hours.

After reading the plot blurb, I was really looking forward to reading Run Time. Loved the plot premise! Struggling actress, horror movie film set. Things get spooky. Yesssssss! Sounds right up my alley. Annndddd…… well. I wish I could tell you how this book checked all the boxes for me…. :/ but it just didn’t.

It took a while for this book to really draw me in. Multiple times I debated DNFing it. It wasn’t bad, it just didn’t grab me either. D:

The plot is alright. It was entertaining reading both the script and the real time story at the same time. It was pretty cool watching the stories mirror each other. It brought a little bit of suspense. A. Little. That was part of the problem…. the suspense, the tension, it never turned that dial up enough! The big twists and reveals felt pretty anti climatic. :/ The characters in the book even say that themselves!! D: That’s never good….

Run Time was… kinda boring. Not enough happened and the stuff that did happen was a little too predictable. This book is kinda disappointing. :/ It wasn’t all bad, but the good didn’t really balance out all the meh parts.
