Review: Mister Magic by Kiersten White

Who is Mister Magic? Former child stars reunite to uncover the tragedy that ended their show—and discover the secret of its enigmatic host—in this dark supernatural thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Hide.

Thirty years after a tragic accident shut down production of the classic children’s program Mister Magic, the five surviving cast members have done their best to move on. But just as generations of cultishly devoted fans still cling to the lessons they learned from the show, the cast, known as the Circle of Friends, have spent their lives searching for the happiness they felt while they were on it. The friendship. The feeling of belonging. And the protection of Mister Magic.

But with no surviving video of the show, no evidence of who directed or produced it, and no records of who—or what—the beloved host actually was, memories are all the former Circle of Friends has.

Then a twist of fate brings the castmates back together at the remote desert filming compound that feels like it’s been waiting for them all this time. Even though they haven’t seen each other for years, they understand one another better than anyone has since.

After all, they’re the only ones who hold the secret of that circle, the mystery of the magic man in his infinitely black cape, and, maybe, the answers to what really happened on that deadly last day. But as the Circle of Friends reclaim parts of their past, they begin to wonder: Are they here by choice, or have they been lured into a trap?

Because magic never forgets the taste of your friendship. . . .

Not sure how to feel about Mister Magic. :/ For 97% of the book, I was really on board with the story! But then things went a little sideways at the end….

The plot is great. Absolutely loved the story of the weird kids show and the reunion of the final cast. Very fun stuff. The idea of there being no trace of the show anywhere and the urban legend like memories is perfect. Loved all the ambiguous added in snippets of group chats, Reddit threads, emails, etc. Nice touch.

I also enjoyed how it felt like you couldn’t trust anyone! Every character felt unreliable. It gave the story an added tension you feel through the whole book. It keeps you hooked because you want to know who was lying or who to trust.

However, things went a little wonky at the end. At a time when we should be getting answers, the story actually felt like it became more confusing. :/ I got the basic gist of Mister Magic, but it felt too muddy. And the ending is alright, but….

After the book was over, the author’s note began. The author starts explaining the book, and what it is basically all about. :/ Honestly, for me, this kinda ruined the book for me. If the book was about this subject, and the author has to explain the story at the end of the book…. I don’t know… Just didn’t feel like it was successful in achieving the point, you know? :/

Mister Magic was entertaining… mostly. The ending felt a little confusing. The wrap up should have been clearer that it was maybe? The author’s note left me a little frustrated and feeling like I should have just not read it. Oh well.
