Review: The Haunting of H. G. Wells by Robert Masello

A PLOT AGAINST ENGLAND THAT EVEN THE GENIUS OF H.G. WELLS COULD NOT HAVE IMAGINED.

It’s 1914. The Great War grips the world – and from the Western Front a strange story emerges. . .a story of St. George and a brigade of angels descending from heaven to fight beside the beleaguered British troops. But can there be any truth to it?

H.G. Wells, the most celebrated writer of his day – author of ‘The Time Machine’, ‘The War of the Worlds’, ‘The Invisible Man’ – is dispatched to find out. There, he finds an eerie wasteland inhabited by the living, the dead, and those forever stranded somewhere in between. . .a no-man’s-land whose unhappy souls trail him home to London, where a deadly plot, could turn the tide of war, is rapidly unfolding.

In league with his young love, the reporter and suffragette Rebecca West, Wells must do battle with diabolical forces – secret agents and depraved occultists – to save his sanity, his country, and ultimately the world.

The Haunting of H. G. Wells by Robert Masello. Narrated by Steve West. Audiobook published by Brilliance Audio, October 2022.

Maaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnn…………… this book. I really wanted to like this book! I enjoy H. G. Wells’ work, plus ghosts, right? Sure!! I’m down for that!! πŸ˜€

😑 You know what I’m NOT down for? BORING side plot with H. G.’s ultra unlikable mistress and the love triangle with his wife. The author made the main cast of characters so unappealing, unsympathetic and difficult to care about!

I know it is a different era, and today’s views on things are different, YADDA YADDA YADDA. That was NOT my issue. I read dime novels from the Victorian era and pulps from the 1930-50s… I get things being different in the by gone era.

UGH! 😑 This book felt like it was trying waaaaaaaay too hard to lean on the real life love triangle of the characters instead of focusing on the haunting ghost plot! Was the point to include so much of the love angle to make us NOT like the main characters?? Is it just poor writing choices?? :/

Why did Rebecca have to have such a large role in this story?? She was just so….. UGGGH! Horrible. Did anyone actually like her PoV in The Haunting of?? I never wanted to “phantom edit” a character out of a book so hard in my LIFE!! >.< I got so sick of her…. soooo tired of her…. I just started to skip her parts of the story. Just because a person actually did exist, doesn’t mean they need that big of a role in the book. She bogged the whole story down and took away from the war and the haunting.

Speaking of the haunting…. where the hell are the ghosts?? It took, like… 6 flipping hours for even a hint of a ghost to show itself after the prolouge. Uh….. WHAT?? WHYYY?? “Haunting” is IN the title! I was so disappointed at how all over the place the plot is instead of just making this a straight forward ghost / haunting story?? :/

I just did not care for The Haunting of H. G. Wells. This book just did not agree with me on any level. DID. NOT. LIKE. Do not pass GO. Do not recommend. D:
