Review: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

A lone astronaut must save the earth from disaster in this incredible new science-based thriller from the #1 ‘New York Times’ bestselling author of ‘The Martian’.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission – and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crew-mates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, he realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Alone on this tiny ship that’s been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, it’s up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And thanks to an unexpected ally, he just might have a chance.

Part scientific mystery, part dazzling interstellar journey, ‘PROJECT HAIL MARY is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival ‘The Martian’ – while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. Narrated by Ray Porter. Published by Audible Studios, 2021. Total run time is 16 hours and 10 minutes.

Not gonna lie… the book blurb makes this book sound like the novel is going to be a little boring! But I picked out this book because I needed a bestseller book for a reading challenge prompt. Even though it sounded a little boring, it was more my type of book then any of the other bestsellers out there. I’m not really a bestseller list kind of girl. I usually find all the hype and buzz of most of those books to be kinda bullshit. ๐Ÿ˜›

I. Was. WRONG. Project Hail Mary was…. phenomenal!! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Trust me, I was shocked. There was very little action. It was a lot of siting around and thinking about how to solve a scientific mystery. Sounds dull but it was 100% NOT. I was really surprised at how much I loved this book. I think it might be an instant favorite now?? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Definitely the best book I’ve read in a few years. What a beautiful and epic book!

I was glued to my seat, hanging on every word. I could not put down this book, and when I had to, I did so extremely reluctantly. I was so hooked on what was going to happen next. 100% entertained. I NEEDED to know how everything was going to turn out! I loved the humor throughout the book. Sometimes I was laughing so hard at the banter between the characters. ๐Ÿ˜€ The ending was just… beautiful. I almost cried happy tears at how things turned out. Almost.

The narrator is Ray Porter. I don’t even need to say much about his performance because the guy is a LEGENDARY narrator. He, of course, was perfect throughout Project Hail Mary. Ray is seriously one of the BEST voice actors EVER. Yes. I went there. And yes, I mean it. Everyone sounded different regardless of age, gender, accent, everything. Ray is the best. Thank you, Ray for another amazing performance.

This book was so good, I already want to re-listen to it! A must read, I think? ๐Ÿ™‚ Do the audio! You will not regret it.
